Short Skirt/Long Jacket [2025]
A KSC cover of Cake's Classic
Charlottesville-based eclectic rock outfit Kendall Street Company returns on January 16 with a new single born from caffeine, chaos, and comment-section controversy. What started as a one-off live cover—sparked when frontman Louis blanked on the lyrics to “Short Skirt/Long Jacket” and powered through with a shot of espresso—quickly evolved into something entirely its own.
A living-room performance video, cheekily captioned “CAKE, but it’s bluegrass 🤯”, went viral, immediately enraging bluegrass purists AND igniting a flood of funk lovers demanding a proper studio version. While the band readily admits the song is “obviously not bluegrass,” they embraced the uproar and delivered exactly what fans asked for.
The resulting studio cut channels the playful improvisation and funk-forward energy of Phish, Widespread Panic, Average White Band and Keller Williams, landing squarely in modern jam-band territory. It’s a high-energy release that captures Kendall Street Company’s irreverent spirit—and signals much more to come in 2026.
